Description

With the rise of populism, the European Union faces an existential crisis.
While the causes are multiple, a key driver is the rise of social media and the proliferation of smart devices. Citizens are increasingly (and instantly) aware of events taking place across the globe. This has caused a paradigm shift in geopolitical affairs, and are events over which citizens have little (to no) control; moreover, the structural reforms and societal re-engagement required to solve them - both at home and abroad - will not bear fruit in the short term, or with the immediacy that we have become accustomed to. A natural consequence is a  feeling of loss of control.
For the reasons above, and indeed many others, citizens are drawn to political slogans of "taking back control of globalisation". But, somewhat conversely, support for the European project remains high when pollsters ask citizens about security policy. Citizens rightly expect that the State will take the necessary steps to ensure their security, and the European Union is required to meet this same expectation. Indeed, 82% of people expect the EU to do more on "security" and 69% believe that it is not doing enough to counter-terrorism. Security has been at the heart of the Juncker Commission's Mandate and, in September 2016, Sir Julian King was appointed to a new Security Union portfolio.
To learn more about his work, AlumNet together with the Dutch Permanent Representation to the European Union are delighted to welcome him to discuss ongoing and new efforts being made in the field of Security.
Commissioner King will give a speech on the Security Union and then participate in a moderated Q&A Session with the audience.
